History

History of Sarawak Cheshire Home

The Sarawak Cheshire Home was established following a visit by Group Captain Leonard Cheshire to Kuching in May 1966. Moved by his advocacy for the disabled, the local community initiated efforts to create a dedicated facility. The Home was officially registered as a society on 12th August 1966.

The Home's building is located on Ong Tiang Swee Road, about 4 kilometers from the center of Kuching, Sarawak. It opened its doors to the first four residents on 11th August 1969. On 1st November 1969, the Home was formally inaugurated by the then Governor of Sarawak.

Since its founding, the Sarawak Cheshire Home has focused on providing care, medical attention, training, and rehabilitation for individuals with disabilities and chronic illnesses. The Home has continually received support from the state and federal governments, as well as donations from the public, enabling it to sustain its mission of aiding those in need.
